There is concern that the federal government is not freeing up enough resources to protect women affected by violence. Monika Remé from the German Women’s Council calls it “scandalous”.

The German Women’s Council has accused the federal government of Not adequately protecting women from domestic violence.

“Germany is not doing enough to prevent violence against women. The Council of Europe is therefore demanding that there should be a national strategy against violence. It is also in the coalition agreement. But due to the current budget negotiations, we fear that there will not be enough resources for an appropriate implementation deposited,” said Monika Remé, a consultant for the Association of German Women’s Councils on the subject of violence against women, to the newspapers of the Bayern media group. The high increase in recorded cases is “scandalous” – only a small part of the crimes are reported.

The current situation report on domestic violence, which was presented yesterday in Berlin, shows that more and more men have to move out or keep their distance because they have inflicted violence on their partner or threatened it. According to this, the number of suspects recorded in connection with crimes for which the Violence Protection Act was applied has increased by eleven percent in the past five years to 6587 suspects in 2022. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, 17 suspects carried a firearm.
