Wood is becoming a coveted stolen good in Germany. “The higher the price of wood, the greater the theft rate,” says the forest owners’ association AGDW. Large companies therefore expect stolen amounts of 0.5 to two percent of the annual harvest. The damage nationwide now amounts to several million euros a year. Firewood has recently become significantly more expensive: according to the AGDW, a solid meter in 2021 still cost between 60 and 70 euros, it is now 100 to 200 euros. As a rule, small amounts of wood would be stolen. However, there are first individual cases in which professional thieves were apparently at work and stole up to 15 cubic meters of wood.
