A woman from Bremen is said to have stolen around 8.2 million euros in 2021. Now the suspect has turned herself in. But many questions are still open.
The case is still a mystery: an employee is said to have smuggled around 8.2 million euros from the building of a Bremen cash transport company. The money should go to them Woman hid in a container that she disguised as a waste paper container with cardboard.
The suspect escaped abroad. The crime happened almost three years ago. On Tuesday the case took a turn: the now 31-year-old alleged millionaire thief turned herself in.
The woman, who was traveling from Turkey, was arrested by police officers at Bremen Airport, investigators announced on Wednesday. The suspect had registered her return to Germany through her lawyer. Upon arrival, she was brought before a judge. She is now in custody. According to the public prosecutor’s office, she announced that she would get involved.
Behinders suspected
Around three years ago, the theft of millions was initially not noticed. The money was stolen on May 21, 2021 – on a Friday before the Pentecost weekend. It wasn’t until the following Tuesday that it was noticed that money was missing. There was great public interest in the theft, which was reminiscent of films like the “Ocean’s” series.
While the suspected thief was still on the run, the investigation began in December 2021 at the Bremen regional court. An accomplice was in court. The then 24-year-old woman is said to have helped, among other things, to organize the alleged thief’s escape. The court sentenced the defendant to three years in prison for aiding and abetting the theft.
The defendant appealed against the verdict. The Federal Court of Justice overturned the verdict – but only with regard to the amount of the penalty, as the regional court announced. The case was referred back to the district court. A new main hearing date has not yet been set.
It is not clear whether there are people behind the case. There are signs of this. rbb24 Research and Report Munich reported that a contact from the Miri clan is said to have helped the suspect escape to Turkey.
In the trial, which began in December 2021, a witness said he had evidence that the would-be thief had a bad environment. The day before the crime, the woman showed him injuries. Apparently the bruises and bruises came from a fall. The witness did not rule out that she was beaten.
