Police commissioner warns against overloading officers

Crime in Germany is increasing, as the 2023 annual report shows. In view of the alarming development, the new federal police commissioner, Uli Grötsch, is calling for greater relief for officers in uniform.

The number of crimes recorded by police last year reportedly rose 5.5 percent to nearly six million. Accordingly, the nationwide clearance rate has also increased slightly. However, the PKS only lists suspects, not actually convicted perpetrators.
Uli Grötsch, a former police officer, was elected by the Bundestag as the federal government’s first police commissioner in mid-March. The office is intended to be an independent and unbound trust office outside the official structures of the federal police force. The police commissioner is intended to create a contact person for employees of the Federal Police, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Bundestag Police, but also for citizens who are affected by police misconduct.
