A 55-year-old was sentenced to five years in prison last week for a banned motor vehicle race that resulted in death. The judgment is now final.

After the death of a 21-year-old in a furniture store parking lot Augsburg, the verdict against the driver of a high-powered SUV is legally binding. Neither the convicted man nor the public prosecutor’s office had filed an appeal within the deadline, as the Augsburg regional court announced on Friday in response to a dpa request.

The 55-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison last week for a prohibited motor vehicle race that resulted in death. In August 2022, he accelerated his car to well over 100 kilometers per hour in the city center. He lost control of the car on a curve and the car, which weighed more than two and a half tons, literally flew across the adjacent parking lot and crashed into a shopping cart frame.

Two customers of the furniture store had to run away from the approaching vehicle. The passenger in the driver’s car died and the two passengers in the back seat were injured. Emergency services who were called to the scene of the accident spoke of a “battlefield” or “field of rubble”.
