“This is of no use to climate protection at all”: Minister Faeser sharply criticizes the actions of the “last generation”. Since the beginning of 2022, the activists are said to have committed hundreds of crimes.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior assigns 580 crimes to the climate protection activists of the “Last Generation” group. “740 people have appeared to the police,” said Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) of “Bild am Sonntag”. She referred to the period since the beginning of 2022 and referred to the first situation report by the Federal Criminal Police Office on the group. “It’s mainly about coercion and property damage.”

Faeser criticized the group’s protests: “We don’t accept that activists violate the rights of others. It doesn’t help climate protection at all, on the contrary: the activists massively damage acceptance.” She defended police intervention and convictions of activists. “That’s right,” she said. At the same time, she emphasized: “But there are differences between criminals and extremists.”

The group has drawn attention to itself, notably with street blockades using taped activists and attacks on artworks, and has said it is acting in the name of climate protection.
