Centenarians outsmart phone scammers

A 100-year-old woman avoided being taken in by a phone scammer who wanted money from her. On the contrary: it is thanks to her that the man could be arrested.

Many seniors are victims of telephone scams – not so a centenarian in Augsburg. Because she saw through a caller’s scam and outwitted him, she praised the police on Friday as “smart” and gave the woman “respect and huge praise”. Together with young neighbors, she managed to catch a perpetrator.

The elderly woman received a call from a stranger on Thursday demanding money from her. She informed her neighbors immediately. While pretending to pay on the phone, the 26-year-old couple called the police. During a simulated handover of money, plainclothes officers were able to arrest a 33-year-old man who wanted to collect the money. The police are now investigating whether the suspect is responsible for two other cases of fraud in Augsburg.
