Russian actors have exploited a security hole in the SPD’s email software. A violation of the confidentiality of the data concerned cannot be ruled out after the cyber attack in January.

E-mail accounts of the SPD party executive have become the target of a cyber attack. According to the SPD, this was made possible by a security gap in the software. “It cannot be ruled out that there was an outflow of data from individual e-mail inboxes,” said an SPD spokeswoman.

According to this, the attack happened in January. According to the spokeswoman, a single-digit number of mailboxes was affected.

According to Microsoft, Russian actors exploited the vulnerability. The SPD investigated the attack with the Federal Office for Information Security and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution immediately after it became known in April. At this point in time, the vulnerability was said to have been closed again. Those potentially affected have been informed accordingly. “A violation of the confidentiality of the data concerned” cannot be ruled out, it said.

SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert said there was solid evidence that attackers from Russia had carried out the attack. The attack did not surprise the SPD. “We feel confirmed in our conviction that we should resolutely oppose Putin’s illegal war and his other attacks at all levels,” added Kühnert.
