A McDonald’s restaurant in China offers its guests not only fast food, but also opportunities for exercise. Internet users are enthusiastic, but from a nutritional point of view, the method does not make much sense.

The guilty conscience always eats with fast food – if you get something to eat from the big chains, you usually hear the voice in the back of your head advising that the calories you have actually consumed have to be worked off again. The problem: In fact, this plan is rarely worn out.

It looks completely different in a McDonald’s restaurant in China. A clip on TikTok shows how the fight against the pounds is declared almost parallel to fast food. In the restaurant there are stationary bicycles mounted on the tables. During the meal, the guests pedal and burn calories. However, it is questionable whether this is sufficient to create a balance between consumed and consumed energy. For example, a hamburger in the fast food restaurant has around 250 calories. To train them off again, it takes about half an hour of cycling.

Cycling at McDonald’s: Scientists are skeptical

Still, the idea has many proponents. The video was posted by user cris13yu, which is followed by more than a million people on the platform. The short clip in which a young woman is cycling while eating a burger and having a soft drink has now been viewed more than 33 million times. “I love this idea,” wrote the user.

Even if the concept sounds sensible at first, scientists look at it rather critically. Eating large meals during exercise is generally not recommended. Eating big before exercise can also lead to problems – for example nausea, vomiting and hiccups, warns medical doctor Daniel Vigil. Instead, athletes should train on an empty stomach. According to a study, that’s when most of the fat is burned.
