Covid report of December 26: sharp drop in the number of cases before an exceptional health defense council

While France crossed the threshold of 100,000 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours on Saturday, Christmas Day, unprecedented, the latest report on December 26 shows 27,697 new cases.

With 104,611 new cases in 24 hours on Christmas Day, the country reached an unprecedented threshold since the start of the epidemic in March 2020, according to figures published on Saturday evening by the Public Health France agency. The 50,000 mark was passed on December 4 and this figure has therefore doubled in three weeks, according to data from the health agency.

But this Sunday, December 27, France records only 27,697 positive cases. A difference in just two days which can be explained by the low number of tests carried out today compared to the record of December 25.

The numbers of patients in intensive care are however still increasing, there were this Sunday 3,299 (+17) patients in the intensive care units. The incidence rate also continues to increase exponentially, it was more than 712 across the country on Sunday.

New measures to come

However, the low figure of contaminations today does not call into question the health defense council which is to be held on Monday, because faced with the proliferation of the Omicron variant, the executive is mobilizing.

President Emmanuel Macron will hold a Health Defense Council on Monday by videoconference at 4:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. GMT), one hour before the Council of Ministers which must adopt the bill establishing the vaccination pass.

A few days before the New Year, will the government announce stronger restrictions or will it choose the status quo? The question of a New Year’s Eve curfew arises more and more.

Some measures have already been taken locally, such as in Savoie (south-east). A prefectural decree extends the measures in force since November 30, requiring the wearing of masks for people 11 years of age and over, including outdoors, in places with more than 10 people, such as markets, theaters, etc. .

Wearing a mask outdoors

Wearing a mask is also compulsory for children aged 11 and over from 9 a.m. to midnight in the municipalities of Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains and Albertville and the municipalities of ski resorts (such as Tignes or La Plagne).
