A few weeks after his defeat in the runoff election for the presidency, Brazil’s incumbent head of state Bolsonaro also lost before the electoral court. It dismissed the contestation of the result.
Brazil’s head of state Jair Bolsonaro is with his complaint against the result of the Presidential election at the end of October failed. The head of the Brazilian electoral court, Alexandre de Moraes, pointed out a Lawsuit by Bolsonaro’s party against the runoff, according to court documents. The party has not presented any evidence of alleged fraud, he said.
Million fine against applicant
In addition, de Moraes imposed a fine of 23 million reais (about 4.1 million euros) on the applicants. They would have maliciously and irresponsibly started a lawsuit and brought it to justice.
Even before the vote, Bolsonaro had repeatedly expressed doubts about the electoral system and indicated that he might not recognize the result. He then lost the runoff election for the presidency on October 30 against left-wing ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This came to a voting share of 50.9 percent, while Bolsonaro reached 49.1 percent. His supporters then blocked the streets in protest at the result. The head of state himself did not explicitly acknowledge his defeat.
