Court cancels property tax hike

The decision was expected on Friday. According to information from Provence, the administrative court of Marseille canceled the increase in the property tax voted in April 2022 by the municipal council. This decision applies from next September 30, when the city of Marseille had been asked to limit, in the event of cancellation, the effects to December 31 in order not to apply retroactivity.

This deadline, however, leaves time for the city to vote for a new deliberation on the subject. The appeal against this increase had been brought by the elected LR Pierre Robin and the departmental section of the National Union of Property Owners.

To release additional resources due to inflation and the cost of energy, the town hall of Marseilles had voted a 14% increase in its property tax in order to compensate for “the increase in expenses”. This increase was to generate nearly 50 million additional euros in the coffers of the city.
