Pop star Britney Spears (39) has won the dispute over her guardianship, which has existed since 2008. The Los Angeles court on Wednesday granted the singer’s request to designate her own lawyer. Her longtime attorney Sam Ingham, who previously represented Spears in the guardianship dispute, had recently requested to be released from office. The singer will now be represented by celebrity lawyer Mathew Rosengart, US media reported. Rosengart previously worked with clients such as Sean Penn and Steven Spielberg.
Three weeks ago, in a hearing, Spears called for an end to guardianship over her person and finances. She feels that her family and managers have taken advantage of her. She is controlled by everyone and cannot determine her own life.
After the singer collapsed mentally due to professional and personal problems, a court decided in 2008 to transfer guardianship to her father. Since then, James Spears has managed his famous daughter’s fortune and other concerns. Later, a financial trustee and another person were appointed as co-guardians.
Many celebrities and fans express their support for the singer under the hashtag “#FreeBritney”. Hundreds of fans took to the streets in Los Angeles, Washington and other cities on Wednesday, calling for freedom for Spears with chants and posters.
