The DAX should start the new stock market year unspectacularly. In the old year, the German benchmark index was still up 16 percent. There was more to be had for investors in the US and France.
The DAX is about to start trading cautiously. Banks and brokers currently rate the 40 German standard values at 15,887 points, which is only slightly above its most recent closing price. On the last trading day of the old year, the DAX was able to make a small profit; on December 30, 2021 there was an increase of 0.2 percent to 15,885 points. Over the year, there was an increase of 16 percent.
CAC40 better than Dow
However, this meant that the DAX had to admit defeat to the best leading index of the European countries, the French CAC40. The CAC40 was able to post a plus of 29 percent in 2021 – and thus even outperformed the US indices. The Dow rose 18.7 percent in 2021, the Nasdaq 21.4 percent and the S&P 26.9 percent.
On New Year’s Eve – in contrast to Germany – there was still trading on the US stock exchanges. The Dow Jones lost 0.2 percent to 36,338 points on Friday. The technology-heavy Nasdaq fell 0.6 percent to 15,645 points and the broad S&P 500 lost 0.3 percent to 4,766 points.
Tokyo and London too
Requirements from Asia are in short supply today, most markets there are closed, including the Tokyo stock exchange. The Japanese are catching up on the New Year holiday today. For the same reason, the important European trading center in London remains closed today.
Evergrande shares suspended from trading
Meanwhile, negative news is coming from the Hong Kong trading center. There shares in the ailing Chinese real estate company Evergrande were suspended from trading today. The exchange announced this without giving any further reasons. Evergrande has more than $ 300 billion in debt.
Gold and Euro with slight losses
The European common currency started the new year with losses against the dollar. For one euro, 1.1338 dollars are paid, which is a minus of 0.3 percent. The troy ounce of gold costs $ 1,826 less than 0.2 percent.
