The next spectacular Dumas film adaptation after “The Three Musketeers”: The first “Count of Monte Cristo” trailer with Pierre Niney is here.

The team that lavishly brought “The Three Musketeers” to the cinema in two parts in 2023 wants to know again. The French film distributor Pathé has released the first moving images for “The Count of Monte Christo” – the next film adaptation of a novel by Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870).

The trailer promises spectacular tracking shots, action-packed fencing scenes and great emotions. If you don’t know the novel or one of its numerous film adaptations: Edmond Dantès ends up in the notorious Château d’If prison on his wedding day due to the intrigues of rivals. After years in prison, he manages to escape. Disguised and using the code name Count of Monte Cristo, he takes revenge.

“First French superhero”

“The Count of Monte Cristo” is directed by Matthieu Delaporte (52) and Alexandre de La Patellière (52). The two wrote the scripts for “The Three Musketeers – D’Artagnan” and “The Three Musketeers – Milady”. The duo also directed the comedy “Der Vorname” (2012), which is based on their own play. In 2018, Sönke Wortmann (64) brought the German film version to cinemas.

According to media reports, Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière describe “The Count of Monte Cristo” as a “true myth that mixes several film genres – adventure and thriller, overlaid by an incredibly strong love story.” They describe the title character as “the first French superhero to step from the light into the shadows and assume the identity of a masked avenger.”

Pierre Niney (34) embodies the Count. The actor celebrated his breakthrough in 2014 when he played the fashion designer in “Yves Saint Laurent”. Since then, Niney has become one of the biggest French film stars.

“The Count of Monte Cristo” has been adapted numerous times for the big screen or for TV series. Famous predecessors of Pierre Niney were Richard Chamberlain (1975), Gérard Depardieu (1998) and James Caviezel (2002).
