Hugh Jackman revealed in an interview how he decided to return as Wolverine for “Deadpool & Wolverine”.

When Marvel hero Ryan Reynolds (47) announced in September 2022 that Hugh Jackman (55) would take on the role of Wolverine again for “Deadpool 3”, it surprised a number of fans and observers. The farewell performance of the mutant armed with adamantium claws in James Mangold’s (60) “Logan – The Wolverine” from 2017 was considered too perfect. But in a conversation with the US cinema ticket provider “Fandango” a few days ago, Wolverine actor Jackman reported that the decision to return was very easy for him after initial hesitation.

Hugh Jackman: Struck by lightning

“I was on the way, I was driving, and literally, like a flash, this knowledge came from deep in my gut that I wanted to do this movie with Ryan,” Jackman explains in the conversation, which can also be seen on YouTube his co-star, Deadpool actor Reynolds, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy (55) took part.

Jackman goes on to say that he was serious about leaving after “Logan – The Wolverine,” but the thought that had always been in the back of his mind since watching the first “Deadpool” film, which was released in 2016, was: “‘These two characters together.’ I knew it, I knew the fans wanted it. Ever since I put on the claws, people had been talking about these two. So that was always there, but I just knew it.”

Marvel boss Kevin Feige was against the return of Wolverine

After Jackman had such clarity about “Deadpool & Wolverine” on his car ride, the star said he “couldn’t wait to get there. As soon as I got there, I called Ryan. And I just said, ‘Let’s do it.’ I hadn’t called my agent, nobody. I had to call my agent and say, ‘Oh, by the way, I just agreed to do a movie.'” Jackman continued: “Sometimes things in life become really clear to you, and when that happens, I’ve learned that you just go ahead and do it.”

Marvel boss Kevin Feige (50) was initially not so convinced of Wolverine’s return. The influential producer and architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is said to have advised Jackman against a comeback because his character Logan had “the best ending in the story” in the 2017 film “Logan – The Wolverine”. “We shouldn’t undo that,” Feige initially told the Oscar-nominated Australian, as “Empire” magazine reported.

But in the end, the head of Marvel Studios was convinced – and not least because, thanks to the Marvel multiverse, Jackman in “Deadpool & Wolverine” embodies a different version of the legendary mutant than the one seen in “Logan – The Wolverine”. was. “Deadpool & Wolverine” will be released in German cinemas on July 24th.
