RKI reports 219 new infections in Germany

The health authorities in Germany reported 219 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. This is evident from the numbers from Monday morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4:24 a.m. For comparison: a week ago the value was 346 infections. The RKI gave the seven-day incidence nationwide as 5.6 (previous day: 5.7; previous week: 8.6). According to the information, eight new deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were ten dead. The RKI has counted 3,726,929 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI stated the number of people recovered to be around 3,620,800. The number of people who died of or involving a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 90,762. According to the RKI, the seven-day R value was 0.82 on Sunday evening (previous day: also 0 , 82). This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 82 more people. The R-value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides; if it is consistently higher, the number of cases increases.

Lauterbach calls for fewer spectators at the German game at Wembley

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach has again spoken out in favor of postponing the decisive games at the European Football Championship and also fewer spectators for the duel between Germany and England at Wembley Stadium. “The semi-finals and the final should not take place in London’s Wembley Stadium, but should be relocated to another location,” said the 58-year-old to the “Tagesspiegel”. For the classic in the round of 16 between the selection of the German Football Association and England, 45,000 spectators can be in the stadium on Tuesday. Only 1500 to 2000 German fans are expected. Tickets are only given to visitors who live in the UK or Ireland. Lauterbach had pressure from politics on the organizers that the total number of viewers be reduced, the newspaper reported. “What you can offer relatively safely, is when every fifth seat is occupied. So in Wembley with a capacity of 90,000 seats that would be a total of 18,000 seats,” said Lauterbach. The European Football Union (UEFA) has set a capacity of 60,000 fans for the two semi-finals and the final. “There is a real risk that a pandemic turbo will be ignited in and around Wembley Stadium,” said Deputy FDP parliamentary group leader Michael Theurer.

Pharmacists Association: No quantity restrictions on vaccine orders

After months of scarcity, the corona vaccination campaign in Germany is entering a new phase. “For the first time since the general practitioners were included in the vaccination campaign, there are no maximum order quantities for the practices, the doctors can order corona vaccines without quantity restrictions,” said Thomas Preis, head of the North Rhine Pharmacists’ Association, the newspaper “Rheinische Post” according to the preliminary report. “That has never happened before.” Nevertheless, that doesn’t change the fact that not every practice can receive the amounts that it could inoculate. “Since the availability of vaccines is still very limited and there are numerous second vaccinations pending, it will still not be possible for as many primary vaccinations to take place.”

Lauterbach: Stiko should reconsider recommendation for child vaccinations

The SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach has asked the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) to reconsider its restricted recommendation for the corona vaccination of children. “In Great Britain there are already many children with Covid in the clinic. The Standing Vaccination Commission argues that Covid is harmless for children. In my opinion, this does not apply to the Delta variant,” said Lauterbach of the “Rheinische Post”. The Stiko has not yet issued a general vaccination recommendation for children and adolescents from 12 years of age. She recommends vaccinations only for 12 to 17 year olds with certain pre-existing conditions such as obesity, diabetes and chronic lung diseases. The committee justified its recommendation almost three weeks ago, among other things, with the fact that the risk of severe Covid 19 disease was low for this age group. “The information from Stiko always refers to old variants,” criticized Lauterbach. “Infecting children with the Delta variant is too risky. And changing lessons is not a solution.” At the same time, he suggested that more should be done to attract vaccine skeptics. “In Israel, the incidence is rising again despite the high vaccination rate and great weather. It is clear that real normality will only come about with a very high vaccination rate.” He assumes that a vaccination rate of more than 80 percent is necessary.

GEW gives Corona school policy a five

The Education and Science Union (GEW) gives school policy a five in the Corona crisis. Over the entire school year one could see “nothing else but inadequate”, said GEW boss Maike Finnern to the “editorial network Germany”. The schools fell into the new situation at the beginning. The teachers did not find any prerequisites for teaching well over a distance. “And over time we have seen time and again that far too little has been implemented.” Finnern said the teachers had to fight a lot in occupational health and safety. Nothing came of its own accord. “Some measures have been taken, but again and again too late. A lot of time has been missed in order to really prepare the schools for the new school year.”
