EU authority: 2500 corona cases in connection with EM

The European health authority ECDC has counted more than 2500 corona infections in connection with the European Football Championship. In the third week of the tournament there was a significant increase compared to the previous week, the EU agency confirmed to the dpa news agency. Scotland is the worst affected with 1991 cases. The Scottish team played their group games in Glasgow and London’s Wembley Stadium. In the UK, the more contagious Delta variant of the virus is spreading rapidly. 436 cases were most recently registered in Finland, especially after Finland’s footballers played in St. Petersburg and fans apparently brought the virus with them from Russia. Some cases have also been reported from Denmark, France, Sweden, Croatia and the Netherlands. In Germany, no corona infections have been found directly in connection with EM.

It is not certain where the affected fans were infected. This could have happened both in stadiums and in fan zones, during travel and at private meetings in the vicinity of the games. The development is “not unexpected” in view of the corona situation, said Lefevre. Large events with crowds are still fraught with risks. She also pointed out that the Delta variant had not yet been “on the scene” when the plans for the European Championship games with tens of thousands of spectators had been tied down. For the ECDC, at least two experts check the infection rate around the European Football Championship every day. Investigations began a week before the tournament started and ended a week after the final on that Sunday.

Scholz: Vaccination campaign gives hope for normal school lessons

Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz expects normal lessons for the coming school year. “The progress made in the vaccination campaign makes me optimistic that normal school lessons will be possible,” said the SPD candidate for chancellor of the editorial network in Germany. “After a year and a half, it is high time to get back to normal school life.” In order to enable as much classroom teaching as possible, the National Schoolchildren Conference calls for a vaccination offer for all young people during the summer holidays. “Especially when it comes to starting school after the holidays, vaccinations are a key factor for safe teaching,” said Secretary General Dario Schramm to the RND.

Lambrecht against the lifting of the mask requirement indoors

Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht (SPD) rejects a lifting of the mask requirement indoors for the time being. “Even a vaccination does not offer one hundred percent protection against the transmission of the virus, as has recently been shown by the spread of the Delta variant in some countries,” Lambrecht told the newspapers of the Funke media group. Therefore, precautionary measures such as wearing a mask indoors are also useful for vaccinated people for the time being. According to the minister, it is also hardly practical to distinguish between vaccinated and unvaccinated people in local public transport or in the supermarket.
