It’s an impressive number. More than 414,000 vaccinations against the coronavirus have so far been administered in the Munich district with its approximately 360,000 inhabitants – in the vaccination centers, by mobile teams in old people’s and nursing homes, in medical practices and by company doctors. Just what percentage of the people in the most populous rural district of the Free State are now actually immunized? This question can no longer be answered in concrete terms, it is said from the district office; not even an estimate is possible.
At the beginning of July, the district office last published vaccination quotas based on the population. At that time, the authority stated that a little more than 37 percent of the over twelve-year-olds in the district were fully immunized. Since then, however, there has been a lack of valid data on vaccination coverage – and this has a simple reason, according to the district office: Although it is statistically recorded how many vaccinations are administered in a district or an urban district like Munich, but not where the vaccinated live. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the postcode does not belong to the “aggregated data” that are transmitted by the resident doctors, says District Office spokeswoman Christina Walzner. “Likewise, the data transmitted to us directly by the vaccination centers no longer allow a correct statement to be made about the district’s vaccination rate,” said Walzner. A “small-scale vaccination quota” can therefore no longer be determined.
Due to the close ties, it can be assumed that many people from the district in the state capital have had themselves vaccinated because they also have their family doctor or specialist there – and vice versa.
Therefore, only the country statistics of the RKI can be used as a reference value: In Bavaria, the rate of first vaccinations on Monday was a little more than 60 percent, in the Free State almost 57 percent have full protection.
The number of vaccinations in the district rose on Monday. However, this is not because people’s willingness to vaccinate would have risen sharply at the weekend, rather the district office has been calling up the current data from the RKI since the beginning of the week and no longer only uses the information from the vaccination centers and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. In the database of the RKI – unlike that of the vaccination centers and the KV – the vaccinations administered by private and company doctors are included. As a result, the total number of immunizations administered in the county increased by several thousand on Monday to 412,338. On Tuesday that number rose by more than 1,600 to 414,010 vaccinations.

In August, a little more than 1,000 children and adolescents between the ages of twelve and 17 had themselves vaccinated. The vaccination rate in this age group continues to rise and this can also be observed in the vaccination centers, according to the district office. With the low-threshold offers such as in outdoor pools, at weekly markets, at tables or as a drive-in, very good experiences have been made in maintaining the vaccination readiness, said spokeswoman Walzner.
The development in the number of infections is currently less positive: On Tuesday, the seven-day incidence reached the 30 mark for the first time since June 25, and was exactly 30.0. A week ago, the benchmark, which indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past week, was only 18.3. From Friday to Monday, 64 infections with the virus were detected in district residents, from Monday to Tuesday there were another 22 documented new infections. The number of people currently infected is also increasing rapidly, and has been in the three-digit range since July 21. On Tuesday it was 173.
“The incidence has been rising slightly but steadily in the Munich district for a few weeks now,” says Ulrike Gernhold, deputy head of the health department. “Above all, we are observing an increase in new infections in the younger age groups up to around 40 years of age.” Gernhold says that among those infected are return travelers, children and adolescents, but also a few elderly people. Therefore, everyone who has not yet decided on a vaccination should accept one of the vaccination or advice offers, Gernhold appeals.
