Corona vaccine: Spahn caps BioNTech deliveries to doctors

Status: 19.11.2021 6:14 p.m.

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 90 percent of doctors order the corona vaccine from BioNTech. So that the stored Moderna vaccines do not expire, the order quantity from BioNTech is now to be limited.

From next week, doctors in Germany will no longer be able to order as much corona vaccine from BioNTech / Pfizer as they want. The maximum order quantity will be limited to 30 vaccine doses per resident doctor, according to a letter from the ministry ARD capital studio is present. Vaccination centers and mobile vaccination teams could order 1,020 doses per week.

Stored Moderna vaccine should not be phased out

The background is therefore the fact that more than 90 percent of the doctors are currently asking for the vaccine from BioNTech / Pfizer. “At the same time, the Moderna vaccine should also be used more frequently for booster vaccinations, otherwise from the middle of the 1st quarter of 2022 there is a risk of expiry of the Moderna vaccines that have already been stored,” says the letter from State Secretary Thomas Steffen to the federal states. “It must be a common concern of ours to prevent this by all means.”

“Depending on the number of orders, the delivery quantities may be adjusted through an allocation to ensure that the distribution is as even as possible,” the letter continues. Orders for Moderna vaccine would not be capped.

The letter also emphasizes that the ministry has “taken precautions so that sufficient vaccine is available for booster vaccinations”. More than 40 million cans would be available for this purpose by the end of the year.
