There is patent EP 1 857 122 B1. The biotechnology company Curevac from Tübingen applied for it at the European Patent Office long before Biontech, the company from Mainz, was even founded. The patent is about optimizing the mRNA so that it becomes more stable. It is one of dozens of patents that Curevac has filed in recent years. Florian von der Mülbe, Steve Pascolo and Ingmar Hoerr are named as the inventors. All of them are founders of Curevac, Pascolo and Hoerr are no longer with the company, von der Mülbe is still advising the company. Unlike Biontech, Curevac does not have a vaccine against the coronavirus on the market to date.
