Single case or already a method for corona demos? A four-year-old child who had been taken to the rally by his mother was injured during lateral thinker protests in Schweinfurt. The police unions are alerted.

During the corona protests in Schweinfurt, a child was injured for the first time who was apparently taken to the protests by his mother. An alarming event for the police union (GdP). Federal chairman Oliver Malchow has explicitly warned parents not to use children as protective shields at demonstrations against the corona measures. “These mothers and fathers accept that their child will get into a violent confrontation,” said Malchow of the Düsseldorf “Rheinische Post”. Often even prams are present at the protests.

He reacted to the clashes between protesters and police officers at a corona demonstration in Schweinfurt, Bavaria. Several participants had tried there on Sunday evening to break through barriers with massive force. The officers used pepper spray and batons.

According to the police, a four-year-old child came into contact with a cloud of pepper spray and had to be looked after by rescue workers because of an eye irritation. A complaint was made against the mother, who, according to the police, comes from the lateral thinking scene and took her child with her while trying to overcome a police line. Four of a total of eight provisionally arrested are to answer in accelerated proceedings in court on Monday.

“Small children have no place in demos”

“Small children have no business at demos,” said the state chairman of the German Police Union (DPolG) in Bavaria, Jürgen Köhnlein, to the Bavarian broadcasting company. “For me, this irresponsible behavior by legal guardians is a case for the youth welfare office.” Especially when it is foreseeable that participants will not adhere to the requirements of the Assembly Act, taking children with them is “absolutely irresponsible”. His colleague Thorsten Grimm called it an “act of inhumanity” to abuse a child as a protective shield. “You have to ask yourself the serious question of what motivates a mother to take her child in a stroller to such a gathering and then to move in the front line while trying to bypass the police barriers.”

GdP federal chairman Malchow complained of increasing radicalization in corona demos. He called on people who wanted to demonstrate peacefully against the compulsory vaccination not to allow themselves to be instrumentalized by extremists. “Anyone who goes to unannounced demos and takes part undercover must know that they are being instrumentalized, often by right-wing extremists,” he warned.
