From the beginning of September, tourists should again be allowed to enter Japan without a PCR test before departure – if they have been triple vaccinated against the corona virus. However, individual tourism remains prohibited.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced further easing of restrictions on entry into the country. Tourists who have been vaccinated three times will be allowed to enter the country from September 7th without having to take a PCR test within 72 hours before departure.

As soon as possible, the aim is to allow more people to enter the country – currently only 20,000 per day are allowed, says Kishida, who is currently in isolation even after a positive corona test. According to media reports, the number could be increased to 50,000 in the coming month.

Borders completely closed

Because of the pandemic, Japan completely closed its borders to foreign tourists in April 2020. In June, the government announced that it would again allow up to 20,000 entries per day. However, this only applies to group tours organized by tour operators. However, individual tourism should remain prohibited.

“Our fight against the virus is not easy, but we shouldn’t be too scared either and consider the properties of the omicron variant,” said Kishida.

Japan is currently recording around 200,000 new corona infections per day, even with almost closed borders. Kishida’s survey values ​​​​are in the basement, among other things, because of the high number of infections.
