Fewer new infections and a further falling seven-day incidence: The corona numbers in Germany continue to give hope. But experts warn that the data is becoming increasingly unreliable. One reason is that testing is carried out much less frequently.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the nationwide seven-day incidence has fallen further – to 566.8. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. On Wednesday, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week was 591.8. A week ago it was 826.0, a month ago it was 1394.0.
However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – due to overworked health authorities and because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only these are counted in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.
183 more deaths
The health authorities in Germany recently reported 96,167 new corona infections to the RKI (previous week: 130,104 registered infections) and 183 deaths within one day. A week ago, 246 deaths related to the virus were recorded.
Comparisons of this data are also only possible to a limited extent due to test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems.
More than 25 million infections
In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since more and more federal states do not transmit to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.
The RKI has counted 25 million and 130,137 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.
