Data from England show that the new variant is gradually displacing Delta. Obviously, Omikron can also undermine the immune protection of convalescent and vaccinated people. However, the vaccination may protect against the course of the disease.

Between Delta and Omikron, there have been many variants of the coronavirus that experts thought ominous. But the public learned little about Eta, Iota or Kappa. Omikron, on the other hand, became world famous even before the World Health Organization classified this new type of Sars-CoV-2 as worrying on November 26th. The reason: Several factors indicate that the situation could get even more serious with this variant. There are the many mutations in the virus at points that are crucial for infection and the immune system; and then there are the first observations about the spread of the variant in South Africa, where Omikron was discovered in a sample of an infected person at the beginning of November. According to this, Omikron could be even more contagious than Delta and also undermine vaccination protection a bit.
