Corona in Germany: Incidence reaches a new high of 263.7

Status: 11/12/2021 6:56 a.m.

The incidence of infections continues to rise rapidly: The RKI reports 48,640 new infections and an incidence of 263.7. Chancellery chief Braun criticizes the traffic light parties for wanting to let the epidemic emergency run out anyway.

The nationwide seven-day incidence has risen again and has peaked for the fifth day in a row. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) stated the number of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week as 263.7. Since Monday there had been records in the incidences reported by the RKI on a daily basis. On Thursday the value was 249.1. A week ago the value was 169.9 (previous month: 65.8).

The health authorities in Germany reported 48,640 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is the second highest value since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of new infections had reached a record level the previous day at 50,196. Exactly one week ago the value was 37,120 infections.

According to the new information, 191 deaths were recorded throughout Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 154 deaths. The RKI has counted 4,942,890 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

DIVI warns of overload in the intensive care units

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI as 4.65 (Wednesday: 4.61). With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay. A nationwide threshold, from when the situation can be viewed critically, is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,450,200. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 97,389.

The German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) warned in view of the increasing corona numbers that the intensive care units could be overloaded by Covid patients. “If this dynamic continues, we will very soon only be able to treat emergency and Covid patients. We must urgently prevent that,” said DIVI President Gernot Marx to the “RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland”. According to the DIVI register, 2828 corona patients are currently being cared for in intensive care across Germany.

2G will apparently soon apply nationwide

Braun criticizes traffic light parties

The executive head of the Chancellery, Helge Braun, criticized the traffic light parties’ plans to combat the corona pandemic. “The numbers are rising dynamically, they are as high as they have never been in this pandemic. And the traffic light coalition says we are now making a law that gives the countries fewer opportunities to react to Corona,” said the CDU Politicians on ZDF. That is the wrong signal.

From his point of view, the better way would be to extend the epidemic situation of national scope, which expires on November 25th. He was “definitely” for such a step, emphasized Braun. The SPD, Greens and FDP want to replace this legal basis for corona restrictions in the countries with a new regulation that includes a smaller catalog of measures. However, the incumbent Health Minister Jens Spahn originally spoke out in favor of no longer prolonging the epidemic situation.

In the “Spiegel” Spahn now exercised self-criticism for this. He said that he only said what everyone knew: that the pandemic was not over, but that there was no longer a parliamentary majority in favor of extending the legal state of emergency. “Self-critically, however, I have to admit that this gave some people the wrong impression. But it was always clear: We are still in a serious situation. We still need decisive state action.”
