COP28 climate conference: A historic but contradictory decision

The global community wants to move away from oil and gas – that is one of the key results of COP28. But it shows once again: the devil is in the details. There is bad news especially for island states.

The world wants to slowly creep away from oil and gas. Don’t worry – you don’t have to fill up your tank straight away, the decision of the World Climate Conference is more long-term oriented. Towards 2050. And it is both historical and extremely contradictory.

This decision is historic because it is the first time that the global community has acknowledged that oil and gas must come to an end at some point. Emissions must come down to limit global warming. Scientifically, this is completely clear.
