There is no more climate protection after the climate conference – just as much as was agreed beforehand. That is not enough, the result of the summit is pathetic.

A comment by Marcel Heberlein, ARD capital studio

That is not enough. We are 1: 5 behind against climate change, UK Prime Minister Johnson said at the beginning of the conference. But now you have caught up one or two goals. Johnson said he wanted to go into extra time.

But no goals were scored at this climate conference. At most own goals prevented. The best example are the rules for CO2 trading. Countries can buy additional climate protection abroad in the future. This is nice for big polluters because it means they have less to do at home.

But even in the very best case, this will no longer result in climate protection, but only the one who had an appointment. That is not enough.

No gateway against climate change

The conference was full of cloudy promises – reduce methane, clear less forests, get out of coal sooner. But only the sentence about coal in the final text: softened so larifari that even the coal countries Australia and India were able to agree. Because they don’t have to change anything.

The USA and China want to form a working group on more climate protection. A working group – ridiculous. Concrete commitments after seven months of secret negotiations between the mega-polluters? No. No goal against climate change.

Promises are far too few

The promises in terms of climate protection alone are still far too few, not to mention keeping. We’re still 1: 5 behind. And we praise ourselves for passing the ball back and forth in our own penalty area without breaking our legs.

How pathetic. And in a few years the referee will whistle.

Was the conference a success? CONTRA
