Controversy over money for street art in Munich – Munich

This Wednesday, the city council will decide on the allocation of funds for the Munich street art scene. The opening of the AMuseum by Positive Propaganda eV previously caused controversy. So far, the association is the only part of the scene that is not only supported for individual projects, but as an institution. In 2023, the total donations to the association from the city will reach a total of more than 470,000 euros. In addition, the AMuseum, one of two locations sponsored by Positive Propaganda, is housed rent-free on the premises of the Free State – and that from now on for another 20 years. In 2022, the association also received “additional funding” for the first exhibition project in the AMuseum, “New Clear Power” with Shepard Fairey, amounting to 40,000 euros.

For the operation of the exhibition room at Schellingstraße 3, the association had registered an additional requirement of 190,000 euros for 2023. In the culture committee, however, some of the city councilors discussed how to divide the funds differently, especially since a larger interest group for street art was recently founded in Munich. But positive propaganda is not part of that. It was decided to increase the general project fund for the scene from 120,000 to 270,000 euros at the expense of an automatic allocation to positive propaganda. The association and Shepard Fairey then sounded the alarm at various institutions that the continued existence of AMuseum was in jeopardy. The topic is bubbling up on social media – not only among fans of the AMuseum.
