Containment again extended in Wallis and Futuna

In force since March 9, the confinement of the population in Wallis and Futuna, a small French archipelago in the South Pacific, is again extended until April 25, the authorities announced on Monday.

This measure, initially decreed for two weeks to fight against the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic, has already been extended twice.

Screening campaign

“This decision gives time to consolidate and expand screening actions for the benefit of sectors and audiences chosen in order to have improved knowledge of the real circulation of the virus in the territory,” said the higher administration on Monday. (prefecture) on its website.

A targeted screening campaign will be launched in businesses and administrations authorized to open and in food businesses. These islands of approximately 11,500 inhabitants have recorded since March 6, 438 cases of Covid-19, including 427 in Wallis, and 5 deaths.

A first dose of vaccine for half of adults

Individual travel is subject to derogations, establishments open to the public and schools are closed and sports, cultural or religious activities are prohibited.

Thanks to the sending from the Metropolis of significant reinforcements of the health reserve, a vaccination campaign of the entire adult population is underway in the archipelago with limited hospital resources. Almost 50% of adults have currently received at least one dose of Moderna vaccine.
