According to the e-commerce association bevh, sales in the second quarter of this year shrank compared to the previous year. Due to the current situation, people have noticeably restricted their consumption.

Online retail is also suffering from the poor consumer sentiment in Germany. In the second quarter, sales in e-commerce with goods fell by 9.6 percent to 21.8 billion euros compared to the same period last year, the e-commerce association bevh reported on Wednesday in Berlin.

In the first half of the year, online retailers’ sales were 1.3 percent below the previous year’s level. The deputy general manager of the bevh, Martin Groß-Albenhausen, said that e-commerce could not escape the far-reaching disruption to the consumer climate caused by the war in Ukraine. “Given the rising cost of living and energy, Germans are clearly cutting back on goods or services they don’t need.”

Between April and June, the sharpest drop was in electronics products, which fell by 19 percent. But online sales of clothing and shoes also fell by 11.1 percent. Grocery and drugstore products were also bought less frequently. On the other hand, there was an increase in sales in the online trade with large household appliances, toys and medicines.
