E-cigarette study: “Vapers” are twice as likely to get erectile dysfunction – A new study on the subject of e-cigarettes and “vaping” examined possible connections between erectile dysfunction in men who consume tobacco using non-traditional methods. It could be shown that users of e-cigarettes are more than twice as likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction as “non-vapers”.
More than 13,000 men over the age of 20 were interviewed for the study. Daily “vapers” showed a more than 2.2 times higher incidence of impotence than men who had never vaped – regardless of whether these men were otherwise already affected by other risk factors. Also in study participants who had never been affected by cardiovascular diseases, it was found:
Independently of this, “vapers” had a 2.4 times higher probability of erectile dysfunction than non-users.
The study was published on November 30, 2021 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. It is important to keep in mind that the study explicitly failed to show a causal relationship. In addition, the magazine “Ladbible” emphasizes that the consumption of e-cigarettes should be far less harmful than conventional smoking.
The team of experts from New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University would like to point out with the study, however, that “vaping” is not without risks. It was also acknowledged that the study was based on self-reports from participants and that these could be inaccurate. Study director Dr. Omar El Shahaw, Assistant Professor in the Public Health Department at NYU, commented on the “Insider” portal.
Literally said Dr. El Shahaw:
“Overall, e-cigarettes are likely to be less harmful than smoking cigarettes to the extent that they replace cigarette smoking. Men who smoke and want to switch because vaping is less harmful should try to limit vaping because it just isn’t risk-free. “
It has long been established that there is a connection between smoking and sexual dysfunction. This is based on the possible effects of the nicotine level on the blood vessels. The experts assume a corresponding connection for e-cigarettes:
“Our analyzes took into account the smoking history of participants, including those who have never smoked. So it is possible that vaping e-cigarettes daily may be associated with a higher likelihood of erectile dysfunction, regardless of the participants’ smoking history ”says El Shahaw.
He concluded:
“We need to fully investigate the relationship between vaping products and erectile dysfunction and the potential effects on men’s sexual health. Our results underscore the need for further studies to put e-cigarette use, which is relatively safer than smoking, into a wider context. “
