From 2001 to 2005, under President George W. Bush, the Republican was the first African American in history to serve as Secretary of State for the United States. Powell is known, among other things, for a controversial appearance before the United Nations in 2003, where he presented alleged evidence of weapons of mass destruction, which Baghdad did not even have, to justify a US invasion of Iraq.

Prior to his time as Secretary of State, Powell was – also the first African American – US Chief of Staff. In the presidential election last November, the Republican stood behind Democratic candidate Joe Biden and against Republican incumbent Donald Trump.
