Dramatic human rights situation in Iran: North Rhine-Westphalia is also suspending deportations to Iran and is therefore not the only federal state.

After several other federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia has also stopped deportations to Iran with immediate effect.

In view of the current situation, it is irresponsible to deport people there, said NRW Integration and Refugee Minister Josefine Paul (Greens) on Saturday evening. “The current demonstrations in Iran and the tough actions taken by the Iranian security forces make it clear to us how dramatic the current human rights situation in Iran is.”

Because of the harsh crackdown by the Iranian security forces against demonstrators, several federal states had decided in the past few days to suspend deportations to the country. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) appealed to the other federal states to follow this decision.

No deportations in Bavaria either

According to Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria also wants to suspend deportations to Iran for the time being. Excluded are “serious criminals,” said the CSU politician in the newspapers of the Funke media group. Statements by Faeser suggested that the federal government no longer considered deportations to the country to be justifiable. As chairman of the conference of interior ministers, he would immediately ask Faeser to inform the federal states of their information base. “Then we can also deal with the topic in the context of the conference of interior ministers.”

The trigger for the demonstrations in Iran was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in mid-September. The moral police had arrested her because of her allegedly “un-Islamic outfit”. As a result, she fell into a coma and died in a hospital on September 16. Critics accuse the morality police of using violence; the police deny it. Since Amini’s death, thousands of people have been demonstrating across the country against the government and the conservative Islamic system.
