Confiscated by cars, the station’s cycle path “is not finished”

Its gray cobblestones are pleasant under the wheels of the bike. But you still have to be able to borrow them. In Rennes, the new cycle path on avenue Janvier is the target of much criticism from regulars of two-wheelers. In question ? Its permanent congestion with cars, delivery vehicles, patio chairs and even huge containers placed near the station, the work of which seems never to end.

Under construction for several years and completely redesigned, the avenue Janvier is supposed to become an axis very used by cyclists thanks to its two tracks located in fringe of widened sidewalks. But for now, the place serves above all as a wild drop-off point for motorists in a hurry.

The end of the work in December

Contacted, the metropolis explains that the site has not been delivered. “The work is not finished. This is why there are still skips on the tracks and why we are not saying anything for the moment, ”assures Matthieu Theurier, vice-president of Rennes Métropole responsible for transport. The elected ecologist, fan of cycling, specifies that dividers will soon be installed between the sidewalks, which now accommodate large terraces in order to secure the paths.

For a while, the installation of separators between the cycle path and the road is still being considered. This device is criticized by users because it can be a source of falls. “The avenue Janvier will be reserved for buses and a few authorized vehicles,” reassures Matthieu Theurier, who rejects the idea of seeing the cycle path serve as a parking area. “We will first do a little prevention with motorists and we will run the municipal police in the area,” promises the elected.

Delayed by the shortage of materials, the development work on Avenue Janvier should normally be completed at the end of the year.
