Concert review: The Munich Philharmonic with Igor Stravinsky’s “Oedipus rex” – Munich

Waltraud Meier only said goodbye to the opera stage in Berlin in October. Now she’s back, left behind the Munich Philharmonic in the Isarphilharmonie, for the part of the speaker in Igor Stravinsky’s “Oedipus Rex”. Meier speaks as forcefully and vividly as she has always sung, even over-pronounces a little despite the microport amplification, but allows the images to become tangible, and above all, with a sure stage instinct, finds the right mix of observer’s perspective and dramatic sympathy. What is anything but easy in the “opera-oratorio” with Latin lyrics, with which the composer wanted to contribute to the objectification and renewal of the ancient tragedy.
