Because of a computer problem, all production lines at the Toyota automaker’s factories in Japan have come to a standstill. The company said work had stopped at all 14 assembly plants.
A problem in the system for managing the parts order is to blame, which is why the parts required for production can no longer be obtained. Spokeswoman Sawako Takeda said the reasons for the failure that halted work on the 28 production lines are being investigated.
The error was “probably not due to a cyber attack,” it said. Last year, one of the company’s suppliers was hit by a cyber attack, which is why production had to be stopped.
The extent of the failure is still unclear
Toyota could not foresee when the fault will be resolved. Toyota did not comment on which models are affected. The extent of the loss of production is also not yet foreseeable.
Recently, several Asian countries whose economies have been suffering from the effects of social restrictions due to the corona pandemic have been struggling with production problems due to shortages of computer chips and other auto parts. The chip shortage problem has only recently been relieved by Japan’s leading automaker.
