Compromise of the traffic light coalition: landlords are involved in the CO2 tax

After a compromise in the federal government, landlords will be involved in the CO2 tax in the future. This means a relief for millions of households. Previously, tenants had to bear the costs in full.

According to this tiered model, landlords pay up to 95 percent of the costs if it is a particularly energy-intensive living space – this proportion decreases the lower the emission of the building is designed. So far, the costs for the carbon dioxide tax have been borne entirely by the tenants.

FDP politician Föst sees incentives for both sides

“Both sides now have incentives to save energy or to invest in energy efficiency,” said the building policy spokesman for the FDP, Daniel Föst ARD Capital Studio. With the phased model, there is now a fair distribution of the CO2 costs.

Actually, the traffic light coalition wanted to pass the draft law weeks ago. At the request of the FDP, however, the vote in the Bundestag planned for October was postponed. According to the Reuters news agency, the slightly modified stage model is now to be decided tomorrow.
