Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier were long-time companions at FC Bayern and the national team. The former goalkeeper hopes for a lasting memory of the football emperor.

Franz Beckenbauer’s long-time teammate Sepp Maier has joined the campaign for a memorial for the deceased football legend.

“Franz deserves a monument in any case, he did so much for German football as a player, coach and official,” wrote the former goalkeeper for FC Bayern Munich and the national team in an article for “Kicker”.

The possible statue for Bayern icon Beckenbauer should best be placed next to the monument to legendary striker Gerd Müller in front of Munich’s Allianz Arena. “How I would love to have a beer with both of them again, but now there’s only me left,” Maier wrote.

The 79-year-old and Beckenbauer were teammates at FC Bayern and in the DFB team for years. Beckenbauer, who was often referred to as the shining light of German football, died on Sunday at the age of 78.

“Franz was called “Emperor” or “Light of Light”, terms that he internally rejected. At heart he always remained the same,” emphasized Maier and wrote: “People like Franz are very rare. Take care, my friend!”
