Comic about Holocaust survivor Ernst Grube drawn by Hannah Brinkmann – Munich

The life story of the Holocaust survivor Ernst Grube has Hannah Brinkman told in a comic. Grube, 91, survived the Theresienstadt ghetto, protested after the war against the repression of German guilt and is one of the best-known contemporary witnesses of the Nazi dictatorship, gives lectures and visits schools. Grube emphasizes again and again: “What I say has to be true.” This applies not only to his spoken words, but also to the portrayal of his memories in the graphic novel “Time Heals No Wounds”.

In order to comply with this, the comic artist Brinkmann and Grube met again and again and had conversations. And because Brinkmann needs as many details as possible for her pictures, such as what the places and people’s clothing looked like, she often asked questions during conversations. It combines Grube’s personal memories with historical facts. The comic is scheduled to appear in autumn 2024. Hannah Brinkmann is already among the nominees for the 2024 Comic Book Prize – well before the book is published.
