In the little village of Hengasch there are residents who are astute as farmers, a lot of mistrust and old scores. But in the new episodes of the humorous crime series, investigator Marie Gabler also struggles with the province.

The phone rings, but no one answers. There is a thick atmosphere in the police station in Hengasch, Liebernich district. Commissioner Marie Gabler (Katharina Wackernagel) still has to investigate the provincial town. Colleague Heino Fuß (Sebastian Schwarz), who would love to be head of the department, is angry and spoils the mood.

The hands-on young police officer Jenny Dickel (Eva Bühnen) undauntedly tries to mediate: So everything is as usual in the humorous ARD crime series “Murder with a View”. After the restart two years ago, from April 16th there will be a new round with dramas from the fictional town in the Eifel. The fifth season runs every Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. on the first.

Two years ago six million watched

There are 13 stories from the village of Hengasch: its citizens eye everything new with suspicion, but especially Inspector Gabler, forge plots and get the plot going. This means that the series finally emerges from the shadow of its cult predecessors with the main roles of Caroline Peters as the slightly over-the-top Sophie Haas and Bjarne Mädel as the stuffy police chief Dietmar Schäffer. An average of six million viewers watched the comeback of “Murder with a View” in spring 2022. There were another six million views for the entire six episodes in the ARD media library.

Inspector Marie Gabler, played as a no-frills investigator by actress Katharina Wackernagel, still wants to get out of the Eifel province and back to the big city of Cologne. The dutiful policewoman does away with the coziness in the station.

Working group “Death and Terror”

Marie Gabler continues to live on the dreary campsite in a caravan that is euphemistically called “Chalet Schwanenstein”. But when the police station is threatened with closure due to a lack of criminal cases, the locals pull together. The “Death and Terror” working group wants to pimp up the statistics with staged emergencies.

In one episode, the revival of the maypole custom goes completely wrong – there is a dead person in the garden. Heike Schäffer (Petra Kleinert) can finally prove herself in the arbitration office. The turbulent episode is about a frozen turtle and secrets from the past that gradually come to light. Then again the traditional mini golf tournament against the neighboring villages challenges investigator Gabler. Because top player Jenny has disappeared.

Actor Sebastian Schwarz says about the fifth season of “Murder with a View”: “Through the 13 episodes we are immersed deeper, have more facets and colors.” The old cosmos will be continued with new biographies. He sees the police officer Heino Fuss, who he plays, as an outsider. “In the village he is not taken very seriously as a single father and second in command.”

Schwarz, who comes from Thuringia and lives in Berlin, thinks it is important that the series deals with rural life and not just deals with city issues. The following also applies in larger social contexts: “We must not only focus on the urban, we must also let the countryside play a role again.”

Katharina Wackernagel says that filming in the countryside in the greater Cologne area was fun. Your Marie Gabler is trying to acclimatize in the new season. “Her heart initially finds a place in an unusual relationship. She also gets a little closer to her colleagues,” describes Wackernagel. However, the investigator is still struggling with the structures in the village. “And her big goal would be to come back to Cologne,” says Wackernagel. In this respect, everything remains the same at the Hengasch police station.
