Column: On hold – district of Munich

Lack of material, delivery problems, cost increases and another feasibility study. Why everything takes so long.

A gigantic steel tower has been rising into the sky in the Perlacher Forest for a few years. Strictly speaking, it is 310 meters, a slender skyscraper, so to speak, in the middle of the Mugl. District Administrator Johanna Zapf from the Greens arrived on this sunny autumn day in 2037. It will still not be able to inaugurate the only and also unique wind turbine in the district of Munich because the rotor blades made of glass fiber reinforced plastic are still missing – lack of material, delivery problems, cost increases, you know it. But at least the district was able to lease the outer wall of the tower to Jochen Schweizer , who has set up a climbing facility there, which the district administrator is allowed to open with a few witty words, together with the brass music of St. Corbinian. Oberhaching’s former mayor, Stefan Schelle, brought his tuba and Zapf a drum. That gives nice pictures. Because the district administrator wants to be re-elected in the spring.

The district had pushed this pilot project briskly during the energy crisis of the 1920s. think big was the motto. Because by the end of the decade the required 400 wind turbines had not progressed and just after an eighth report the seventh bird census was completed and another public survey is being prepared. A current feasibility study is also pending. The colossus from the Perlacher Forst, as the unfinished windmill is popularly known, was not only intended to solve the energy problems, but also to outperform Schipkau. Schipkau is a really small community in the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz. In May 2022, it was announced there that the largest wind turbine in the world would be built: 300 meters high. But the Champions League is up to Bayern, Munich and above all the district of Munich.

But here, too, everything takes time. Before you can even think about making decisions, everyone has to be queried and various experts involved. That is why most households are still waiting for a geothermal connection. The pipes or the heating engineers or both are missing. In the Unterhachinger stadium, the footballers now play with headlamps in the winter months because the game association has still not been able to agree on a purchase contract with the municipality and it remains unclear who will pay the electricity bill. And nobody knows exactly why the express buses were slowed down 15 years ago, because they are still waiting for information from the Unterfoehringer town hall.

In order not to get totally nervous in this permanent queue – because that is unhealthy – the adult education center has expanded its course program in the field of mindfulness. Since the fall semester of 2022, the big hits in Unterhaching have been “The dark side of the brain. How we outsmart our subconscious and switch off negative thought loops” and “Drum yourself free for slightly advanced students”.
