A sailor is stranded on Norderney with his no longer seaworthy sailing boat. The ship attracted numerous onlookers. This is now over.

The one on the island Norderney’s stranded sailing boat, which has become a tourist attraction, has been recovered. Employees of a specialist company loaded the “Wibo” onto a trailer at low tide and brought it near the island’s harbor, as a photographer from the German Press Agency reported. Pictures show how the ship was attached to an excavator.

On Monday, a 70-year-old sailor ran aground on the island’s western beach in his boat “Wibo”, which was no longer maneuverable. Since then, the ship has attracted numerous tourists.

The sailing boat, which the man built a lot of himself, threatened to damage the coastal defenses. Since it was storm surge season, it could have been washed ashore even further. The ship has a broken engine, a broken anchor and a damaged rudder. Towing across the sea was not possible.

To cover the costs of possible repairs to the ship, a private initiative is collecting donations from island residents. She has published a call for this on the Facebook platform.

It is not yet clear what will happen next for the sailor from Freiburg. For the past few days he has been living on the beach on his ship. “He is physically unharmed, but a little stressed because of the many onlookers,” an island spokeswoman said on Thursday. Before his abrupt stop on Norderney, he sailed from Hooksiel near Cuxhaven to Spiekeroog and Juist, among other places.
