Colorado ballot ruling against Trump appealed

New development in the legal ballot dispute surrounding former US President Trump: Colorado Republicans have appealed to the Supreme Court against his exclusion from the elections in the US state of Colorado.

An appeal has been lodged against the decision of the Supreme Court of the US state of Colorado that former US President Donald Trump is unfit to serve as president. The American Center for Law and Justice says it is challenging the decision on behalf of the Colorado Republican Party.

The court’s verdict was “wrong,” according to the application from Wednesday evening (local time). “Unless the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision is overturned, every voter has the opportunity to challenge the disqualification of a political candidate.”

“Insurrection” against the Constitution

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled last week that Trump was unfit to serve as president because of his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and therefore could not take part in the primary.

Trump wants to move back into the White House for the Republicans after the 2024 presidential election. His opponents are trying to have Trump’s name removed from presidential election ballots in various states. They argue with a constitutional amendment that excludes people from elections who have incited an “insurrection” against the constitution. So far they have only had success in Colorado.

Trump had announced an appeal against the verdict in Colorado – but has not yet filed one. The Colorado Supreme Court has itself suspended its decision until the issue is finally resolved in the event of an appeal.

Michigan court rejects exclusion of primary elections

In Michigan, Trump remains a candidate in the Republican primary for the presidential nomination. The state Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to hear an appeal of a lower court’s ruling. Opponents of Trump did not want to see the former president’s name on the ballot because of his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump had pressured two election officials in Michigan not to certify the 2020 election results. This emerges from a recording of a telephone conversation after the election, which was published by the newspaper “Detroit News”.

The primaries of the two major US parties to nominate their presidential candidates begin in mid-January. Trump is far ahead among the Republicans, and the Democratic incumbent Joe Biden is likely to run against him.
