Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has expressed his desire not to censor transactions to and from the embargoed address. After the transformation of blockchain to proof-of-stake
Ethereum developer Lefteris Karapetsas asked Coinbase, Kraken, and other centralized exchanges what they would do if the US government calls for compliance with sanctions and block transactions associated with blacklisted Ethereum addresses. This question has become a hot topic in the crypto community after the Tornado Cash boycott last week.
Centralized exchange is one of the largest validators in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake (PoS) is currently in testing. But it will soon enter the main network.
Karapetsas tweeted asking if regulators asked you to censor ethereum at the protocol level against validators What will you do :
A) Comply and censor it at the protocol level.
B) Turn off the Stake service and maintain network integrity.
Three days later, Armstrong answer that :
“It’s a hypothetical story that we hope will never happen. But if we’re going to do it, we’ll choose B, but I think we have to focus on the big picture. There may be better alternatives such as (C) or legal challenges that may be made to help achieve better results.”
Armstrong also supported Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev, who wasarrestin the Netherlands last week by Coinbase CEO. Tweet“Open source software developers should not be arrested. even if the software is used by malicious people.”
