After the arson attack on the company car of Coburg Mayor Dominik Sauerteig (SPD) in August 2022, the public prosecutor’s office filed an application in the security procedure. As a result, the authority assumes that the suspect’s health is limited, that he cannot be held responsible for his actions and that he is dangerous to the general public. Such proceedings often end with the suspect being committed to a psychiatric hospital.

The man, who was 54 at the time, is said to have set fire to two of the city of Coburg’s official cars four months ago, including the mayor’s electric car. Not only were the two cars completely destroyed, neighboring buildings were also damaged. The public prosecutor estimates the damage at more than 300,000 euros.

According to Coburg’s Mayor Sauerteig, the man is said to have previously covered him with personal “threats and insults”. A house ban was pronounced against him in the town hall. The man was arrested shortly after the nightly fire in the courtyard of the town hall. According to the police, various utensils were found on him that indicated that he set the fire. The police called the man “officially known”.
