A boat is in distress off the Greek island of Kythera. The Coast Guard responds, around 100 people are rescued.

The Greek Coast Guard has rescued around 100 migrants from distress at sea. This was reported by the state broadcaster (ERT), citing the authority. According to this, a boat was in distress off the Greek island of Kythera.

The coast guard was able to locate it and bring people to safety at the port of Neapolis in the Peloponnese peninsula, it said. All people are well. The rescue operation took place on Saturday evening.

Especially in the summer months, the Aegean and Ionian Seas are teeming with sailing boats and yachts. The boats used by the gangs of smugglers that bring people to Italy are difficult to spot. Engine failures or leaks are common on the often outdated boats used by gangs of smugglers. Accidents happen all the time.

According to the UN, at least 326 people died in the region last year. However, the Coast Guard assumes that the number of unreported cases is higher.
