The right-wing Spanish politician and co-founder of the right-wing populist party Vox, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, was gunned down on the street in Madrid by an unknown assailant. Several media outlets, citing police sources, reported a shot in the face or head.

The 78-year-old was taken to the hospital consciously. His condition is stable and his life is not in danger. The motive for the crime is unclear. According to the media, the police have not ruled out a robbery and have begun an investigation.

Conservatives against Sánchez

Vidal-Quadras was leader of the conservative PP party in Catalonia in the 1990s. From 1999 to 2014 he was Vice President of the European Parliament and was one of the founders of the right-wing extremist Vox party in 2013, which he quickly left after its founding.

Vox and the Conservatives are among sharp critics of an amnesty law for Catalan independence supporters planned by current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. In return for the planned law, the separatists support the formation of a new government under the socialist Sánchez. This means he could remain head of government even though he did not win the most recent parliamentary election.

Vidal-Quadras had not been politically active for years, but continued to appear publicly as a media commentator and columnist. Today he wrote a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter) in which he sharply criticized the agreement between the socialist PSOE and the Catalan separatist party on an amnesty. Vox and the conservatives have been organizing mass protests against the amnesty law and against Sánchez for weeks.
