The COP28 climate summit will begin in Dubai in a few weeks. Germany’s chief climate negotiator Jennifer Morgan is less pessimistic than the young climate activists when it comes to climate protection.

Germany’s chief climate negotiator Jennifer Morgan sees the fight against global warming on the right track, even if experts repeatedly denounce political inaction and short-sightedness. Before the climate summit in Dubai, which begins in three weeks, the chances of forcing an exit from the use of fossil energy have increased, said the representative for international climate policy at the Foreign Office in the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Saturday). “The number of states that are committed to this is growing and growing,” as was recently made clear at a preparatory meeting in New York.

It is true that resource-rich exporting countries still earn a lot of money from coal, oil and gas. But the message has now reached everyone, says Morgan – and the world is moving in a different direction: “The climate crisis is so severe, the fight for survival has begun for the first few states, and that’s why the turning point has been reached: the momentum can no longer be stopped .”

Jennifer Morgan: Climate protection also in the USA and China

Europe is no longer alone when it comes to climate protection. “The USA wants to become climate neutral by 2050 and is catapulting itself to the forefront of green technologies. China is already the largest electric car market, already has a third of the world’s solar and wind power capacity and is rapidly expanding renewables,” said Morgan. Chile is starting green hydrogen production. Colombia no longer wants to export coal; there are important decisions to expand renewables in Brazil and Uruguay, as well as in Africa. “And the countries in the Gulf are now building up green industries at a record pace, including for green hydrogen production, because these are the revenue opportunities of the future.”

Climate protection and prosperity are not a contradiction, emphasized Morgan. The fact that billions are still being invested in oil and gas production in many places is due to the fact that “the bombastic costs that the climate crisis has long been causing are still not taken into account by the markets,” said the State Secretary. “The countless people who are suffering from the consequences of global warming or who have even died from it are also of little importance.”

COP28 climate summit in Dubai

The climate summit, known as COP28, will take place from December 1st to 3rd in the Arab emirate of Dubai, which has become rich thanks to its enormous oil reserves.
