The lawn crunches under Greta Thunberg’s feet, the blades of grass on the green strip have dried up. It has hardly rained in Strasbourg for weeks, only on Tuesday evening will a hailstorm sweep over the city and knock down trees in the surrounding area. Thunberg is now standing there with her fellow activists in the Fridays for Future climate movement, the European Parliament as a backdrop, and behind her the activists are holding up a black banner. “We are nature protecting itself,” it says. It’s her call for the day when MEPs will have their last argument over the Nature Restoration Bill from 9am, a good 24 hours before the vote that would be so much more than just a decision on an EU law to restore nature.
